On the Occasion of World wetlands Day 2005 Taudaha Jamboree – Bird Watching & Clean Up Campaign

12th February 2005, Kathmandu
The Friends of the Bagmati (FOB) and Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) organised the event - Taudaha Jamboree 2005, which is the first ever event organized by Friends of the Bagmati and Tuadaha Yuwa Samiti to promote and conserve Taudaha Lake.

The Friends of the Bagmati (FOB) is a registered non-governmental organization established by a group of people from different walks of life who have come together through their common concern and their wish to restore the environment of the Bagmati and other rivers of Nepal.

This program aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general and the Ramsar Convention in particular is coherent to the theme given by the Ramsar Secretariat (Cultural and Biological Diversity of Wetlands) to celebrate this year’s World Wetlands Day.

The Taudaha Lake has been chosen because of its cultural and biological significance. Pilgrims throng Taudaha to worship Nag or snake during Naga Panchami (festival of nags/serpents). The rich biological diversity of the lake in general and the habitat of water fowls in particular have also made this an important wetland resource.

Taudaha is one of the small lakes in the Bagmati watershed area. It has also contributed to recharge the groundwater of the Bagmati Watershed. Bagmati, which is the biggest river of the Kathmandu valley, originates from Shivapuri hill, 25 km north of Kathmandu City at an altitude of 2650m above sea level. Tau Daha is at approximately 6 km to the south-west of Kathmandu. This is rich in floral and faunal diversity.

The Consultative Workshop on Taudaha Conservation had already been organized on 31st January 2005 at the NTB Auditorium Hall. Experts and participants at the Workshop organized by Friends of the Bagmati stressed on the need to conserve the wetlands that are threatened due to increasing anthropogenic activities.

The Bird Watching program at Taudaha has been organized today 12th February 2005. Students, Environmentalists, NGOs, INGOs, local govt. bodies all were invited to participate in this important programme. The main objective for organizing this programme was to promote Bird Watching and to encourage the local youths in conserving the Taudaha Lake, 5 kms to the south of Kathmandu City.

The Friends of the Bagmati believes such programs initiated by the local people will help to conserve the wetlands resources in a sustainable way.

After the Bird Watching programme, a lean up programme was organized by removing the green plants in the lake. Many Environmentalists, NGOs, INGOs have shown keen interest in developing and promoting this historical and cultural lake as a tourism destination or as a picnic spot in the future.

Officials of Dream Nepal Travel & Tours Pvt. Ltd. and Discover Nepal (NGO) participated in this interesting programme, which is one of the main objectives of Discover Nepal too.
